Cyberpunk 2077

Intro

The first time I spent an evening in Cyberpunk 2077, I managed to lose track of the main mission more often than I had thought. Night City threw me sideways with strange conversations, side gigs, new cars, new shops, rooftop views, and tiny details that made wandering around worthwhile.

It’s still one of the best things about the game. It doesn’t feel like you’re just running between missions. You’re experiencing a giant, futuristic city where nearly every district has its own tone, tempo, and collection of trouble to come around the next corner.

Welcome to Night City

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world first-person RPG set in the infamous Night City, California. You take on the role of V, a mercenary who seeks to make a name for themselves while getting involved in a far bigger fight.

It mixes first-person shooter combat with role-playing, exploration, driving, dialogue, character growth, cyberware, gadgets, and story branches. You don’t have to pick a specific style either; depending on how you develop V, you can go in guns blazing, wield blades, hack your way through obstacles, remain stealthy, or use cybernetic upgrades and tools.

And Night City is huge.

You can spend dozens of hours working through the main story, but the side activities are where much of the character shines. Fixers give out jobs, encounters appear across the city, and each district has its own look and feel.

The city encourages discovery.

How Cyberpunk 2077 Plays

At its core, Cyberpunk 2077 is exploration and combat blended with character development. You explore Night City from a first-person perspective, undertake missions, acquire items, upgrade V, interact with characters, and make choices that can influence conversations and a handful of story beats.

It allows a lot of ways to approach situations.

You can use guns, close-combat weapons, stealth, hacking, grenades, cyberware skills, or the environment to your advantage. Some combat encounters lean on pure firepower, while others put you in a position where you can disable enemies, hack into them, or sneak past.

Character development supports those options. As V grows stronger and gains new skills, you can shape a playstyle with your equipment and cyberware.

Driving is another important part of exploration. Night City has a wide array of cars and motorcycles, and recently, we released new systems for the ways players can move through the city. The Auto Drive feature also enables other vehicles to drive toward a marked point of interest or to provide players with a relaxed tour.

And then there’s Photo Mode.

You can spend embarrassing amounts of time there.

The game provides plenty of ways to tweak the camera, characters, effects, lighting, weather, and others. Plus, recent updates expanded the NPCs, poses, lighting effects, filters, and clothing options available to the photo mode.

Why the Experience Still Works

The biggest thing that makes Cyberpunk 2077 such a compelling experience is variety.

You may fight your way through a heavily fortified area one hour, then spend the next exploring Night City from afar, stopping for a snack, and listening to the radio. Nothing is forced toward one activity or direction.

That freedom gives you a more meaningful progression.

You can develop V as a more stealth- and hacking-focused agent, a guns-blazing warrior, or any combo thereof. You can acquire the items needed for that build over time, changing your approach while upgrading your equipment.

The city itself helps immensely.

Night City isn’t just a target for the game’s missions. Its streets, highways, marketplaces, clubs, business centers, industrial zones, and residential neighborhoods all give exploration a purpose. When you’re not completing a task, there’s frequently something nearby worth investigating.

Plus, the game’s new systems allow you to travel around easily.

Recent updates introduced new vehicles and motorcycles, expanded vehicle customization, and enhanced Auto Drive functionality that offers even more relaxed options for traveling around the city. PC players can also take advantage of support for new technologies such as AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, and frame generation, helping to match up available hardware with reasonable visual settings.

And I need to mention PC modding support. In addition to the new content, there’s a whole new set of tools for creating custom content, so people can create new sounds, new graphics, new characters, new modes, and much more.

Common Ways to Play

  • Going down the main story line with V across Night City
  • Completing side jobs and fixer contracts
  • Discovering new districts and locales without a specific purpose in mind
  • Making V into a stealth-focused hacker
  • Building V into a firearms-focused character
  • Creating a melee-oriented sword-wielder
  • Finding, upgrading, and customizing weapons and equipment
  • Purchasing and traveling through Night City in a variety of cars and motorcycles
  • Driving around the city with Auto Drive
  • Customizing new vehicles in the latest paint shop tools
  • Capturing stunning screenshots with Photo Mode
  • Creating new content and mods with support for REDmod
  • Re-experiencing the game’s story through the Phantom Liberty expansion
  • Visiting the game’s open areas when you want to find something you might’ve missed
  • Tweaking graphics options to suit your available PC hardware

Final Words

The key to any great experience in Cyberpunk 2077 is to stop trying to conquer the city. Take an unexpected turn. Follow a new character. Explore a new interior. That’s what makes the game feel authentic, especially because you can develop V across a wide range of approaches, and because the city itself invites a very broad variety of play styles and exploration.

Combat offers enough options to support both gun-junkies and stealth experts, and the world offers a seemingly endless list of locations, shops, side activities, and other things to explore. Auto Drive, new vehicles, graphics options, and our ongoing support for innovative new technologies give players plenty of ways to tweak the experience as they see fit. And, for the PC crowd, PC modding support in the form of REDmod makes it easy to create and install custom content like new sounds and new modes.

It’s why I keep coming back to it. There’s always somewhere else to go. A new side gig to stumble upon. Another oddball NPC wandering the streets. Even just a different way to approach your local megabuilding. Or, sometimes, you just need to hop in the car and go.
